Mixed train

Railway terminology varies from country to country, between model and reality, and even between different professions within the industry. This forum seeks to clarify such diversity.

Mixed Train = Gemischter Zug

Post by Atlanta »

A Mixed Train = Gemischter Zug is known in german spoken countries as PmG or GmP.

PmG = Personenzug mit Güterwagen = Passenger Train with Freight or Goods Cars, like Holiday Trains with additional Automobil Cars in their end of train.

In the past Epochs or Eras Passenger Trains delivered Express Freight or Goods Cars to other Train Stations onto shortes and most quickly routes, a shunting loco is needed to add a freight or goods wagon on an express, through or local train on last position of the train.

In very early epochs and eras (up to 1933) a safety car was needed behind the steam loco to protect passenger coaches against boiler explosion or derailment accidents, so they used empty freight or goods cars or empty and closed passenger cars for the first one or two cars. Postal or baggage cars did the same service as safety cars, too.

GmP = Güterzug mit Personenwagen = Goods or Freight Train with Passenger Cars are still existing, too i.e. in the Alps as "Rollende Landstraße = Rolling Road" are known a set of special short coupled Flat Cars for Road Trucks with in the end coupled passenger or sleeping car for the Road Truck Drivers. Through some Countries in the Alps this is fastest way for Truck Companies to cross the alps using the railway tunnels.

In the past in early epochs or eras such trains did service onto main and branchlines, at least on branchlines only until the new version of this mixed train had been created again onto express lines.

To handle a GmP was a little complicated.
The passenger Cars in the end needed to uncoupled on a platform, than the loco did the freight or goods car shunting service, in the end of the shunting service the passenger cars coupled to the train and the train moves to next railway station.

People who needed to use such trains had long time to wait at several stations, freights or goods had higher priority.

In modern times these trains moving between two stations only.

With best regards from Germany,
Ya Ingo
