FIXING A TAPPET FILING ERROR

Post by modadmin »

One of our customers made an error when making a rather complicated tappet. The error was that he located one of the notches in the wrong place - a place where it would interfere with other operations.

Rather than start from scratch and waste all of the other work on the tappet, he filled the unwanted notch using 2-pack epoxy resin (Araldite). After the repair had set, it was relatively easy to saw and file the excess resin to a smooth finish.

The first picture shows the epoxy in place; the second shows the finished result.

I meant to add that it is wise to roughen the surface of any notch that you are filling to give a good key for the resin; also to de-grease the surfaces.
