Lever Colors
Over on this side of the Pacific, a spare lever was generally painted grey. Couldn't leave it in its original color since it no longer was serving its original purpose. Didn't want to have it confused with anything else.

Semaphore Direction
As previously posted, semaphores generally point away from the track. For British/British Empire railways with left-hand running, this meant the blades faced to the left. For North American railroads with right-hand running, this meant the blades faced to the right. In the U.S., the one exception to...

Flat Crossing
Used: USA, Canada
Known as a Crossing at Grade (not to be confused with a Grade Crossing, which is where a road crosses the tracks). May or may not have signal protection, depending on the traffic and/or railroad.

UP and DOWN
I'm sure it can get confusing at times. In the United States and Canada, lines are generally directional based on the railroad. For the most part, lines are classified as Eastward or Westward, even though they may predominantly be Northward or Southward - it all depends on the railroad system. Eastw...

After re-reading the previous postings, I may have mis-read something. If the lever was black (or blue, or red) with one horizontal white stripe about halfway up, then it'd be an electrical connection to whatever device it was (in the USA, at least). The posting implies an alternating black-white-bl...
